De festiviteiten in het kader van 75 jaar bevrijding Ootmarsum kunnen vanwege het coronavirus niet doorgaan. Een hele, begrijpelijke keuze. De verhalen over de bevrijding blijven echter levend. In het nieuwe jaarboek van de Heemkunde staan een paar prachtige oorlogsverhalen opgetekend. En zo zijn er meer, want hoe mooi is het dat er op het archief van WW2 People’s War een interview staat met Harry Rawkins. Hij was captain van het 2nd Batallion East Yorkshire Regiment in Europe 1944 en verantwoordelijk voor de bevrijding van Ootmarsum op 4 april 1945. In het interview uit 2005 weet Rawkins zich nog haarfijn te herinneren dat de geallieerde bevrijders en de Siepels uit een brandnew Jerrycan bier dronken. Het bataljon heeft D-day kunnen overleven. Niet actief, maar wel als reserve achter de hand gehouden. Daarna toch de overtocht gemaakt en onder gevaarlijke omstandigheden Europa ingetrokken. Rawkins is in het gesprek vol lof over zijn bataljon dat hij kwalificeert als een vrienden compagnie.
De geallieerde helden
Harry Rawkins meldt over Ootmarsum het volgende, dat we wel in het Engels hebben laten staan. Hij vertelt onder meer over de wapens, waarover het bataljon beschikte: “We have a three inch mortar platoon, a carrier platoon and a six pounder anti-tank gun and I was commanding, well for a time, both te mortars and the carriers. But the great thing was when the Germans were just begining to withdraw and as I say I was serving with the East Yorkshire and the Colonel, whose name I can’t remember now, sent me out with my Carrier Platoon to do a recce and to see what was what. I ran into this town of Ootmarsum which is a town on the borders of Germany and Holland. We didn’t have a battle, because the Germans were already pulling out. When we arrived at Ootmarsum I was met by the Burgomaster who rejoiced in the name of Baron Honory Schimelpendic van der Oije.
Feestende soldaten en burgers
Well when they decided that, or least when we got away because, as you can image, the said: “Hurray, you are the first English troops we’ve got. The Germans are pulling out the other side of the town.” In vain we tried to get away because everybody came with bottles of wine and biscuits and packets of food that they had oviously stored up. It took me a hell of a long time to round up the troops and follow these retiring Germans. I think that one of mij people did let off a volley of shots in the direction we heard these Germans pulling out. But nothing was happening, so we came back to Ootmarsum and I collected up the bits and pieces of my Platoon, who were being taking off to all sorts of locations by all the ladies, it was a right old pandemonium. I eventually collected them up and reported back to Head Quarters.
Bier uit een brand new jerrycan
The Burgomaster wrote to the Colonel and askes if he would allow me to go over and spend some time with them in Ootmarsum and it was then that I was made a Fremman of the Town. W had an enourmous party. Beer was served from aan brand new jerrycan – you know what a jerrycan is? Well it was a brand new one. Of course there were enourmous stocks of fuel and equipment and the Burgomaster got hold of one of these jerrycans which was perfectly clean. In fact it was brand new and we had it filled with ale and we drank from that.
Tot zover het Ootmarsumse deel uit het interview met Rawkins. Met z\ijn bataljon eindigde hij tenslotte in Bremen om vandaar terug te keren naar zijn woonplaats Bedford in Engeland. Daar zocht hij werk, maar kreeg iets aangeboden dat hij niet accepteerde. Dus bleef Harry Rawkins in het leger en werd onder meer uitgezonden naar Kenia en Singapore om vervolgens terug te keren naar Engeland.
